India's First Indigenous Bullet Train (BEML B28) Revealed: Inside the Bengaluru Aditya Plant, 280 kmph Specs, and August 2027 Launch

India's first Made-in-India bullet train—the B28 high-speed trainset-has officially been revealed part by part at BEML's dedicated Aditya plant in Bengaluru. Ordered by NHSRCL under the supervision of ICF Chennai at an initial cost of around Rs 866 crore for two trainsets, the stainless-steel bullet train is currently undergoing a critical squeeze test ahead of full coach integration, a Rs 173 crore climatic chamber test, and its targeted August 2027 launch between Surat and Bilimora.

Built at BEML's Dedicated 'Aditya' Plant in Bengaluru:

India's high-speed rail journey has taken a major step toward self-reliance with the first detailed reveal of the indigenous B28 bullet train. Every major section of the train is being manufactured part by part at the newly built Aditya High-Speed Rail Manufacturing Facility at BEML's Bengaluru complex, which was set up specifically for this bullet train project.

The initial order for two eight-coach prototype trainsets was placed by the National High Speed Rail Corporation Limited (NHSRCL) at a cost of around Rs 864 crore. While BEML is leading the production in partnership with Medha Servo Drives for the propulsion and control systems, the entire project is being supervised by the Integral Coach Factory (ICF), Chennai.

Stainless Steel Body with World-Class Finishing and Squeeze Testing:

A close inspection of the trainset inside the factory shows impressive build quality. Even though every coach shell is built using high-strength stainless steel (SUS301L-ST), BEML has achieved a smooth, world-class exterior finish along with an aerodynamically shaped nose cone designed to cut air drag and handle tunnel pressure waves.

Right now, the assembled carbody structure is undergoing a critical squeeze test under a load of 1,500 kilonewtons (kN) to verify its structural strength against high-speed atmospheric pressure changes. Once the trainset passes this squeeze test in the next one to two weeks, full coach integration will beginDuring this stage, engineers will install:

Each 202-meter-long, eight-coach trainset (four motor cars and four trailer cars) will seat around 557 passengers across seven Standard Class coaches (3x2 layout) and one Executive Class coach (2x2 layout).

The passenger chairs are world-class in both comfort and finish, designed specifically around Indian body measurements. The Executive Class seats feature 180-degree rotation and deep recline, while all coaches include onboard Wi-Fi infotainment, multilingual LCD screens, charging sockets at every row, and wheelchair-friendly level boarding with retractable footsteps for Divyangjan passengers.

Rs 173 Crore Climatic Chamber Test and Rollout Timeline:

Before entering service, the coaches will also undergo extreme weather testing inside a specialized Climatic Test Chamber built by ICF Chennai at a cost of Rs 173 crore. This lab will test the train across extreme temperatures (-10°C to 55°C), heavy monsoon rain, high humidity, and dust.

Engineered for a maximum design speed of 280 kmph and an operational speed of 250 kmph (accelerating from 0 to 100 kmph in 52 seconds), the B28 bullet train will follow a clear phase-by-phase schedule:

March 2027 (Q1 2027): Arrival and rollout of the first B28 prototype trainset from BEML's Bengaluru plant.

Spring 2027: Climatic validation and movement of the trainset to the Surat rolling stock depot for phase-by-phase testing.

May–June 2027: Full-scale track and speed trials on the high-speed corridor.

August 2027: Targeted launch on the priority section from Surat to Bilimora.
