Key Details of India's First LNG Train

LNG train in India: After launching its first hydrogen-powered train in July, Indian Railways has now introduced its first LNG-powered train. The LNG-diesel dual-fuel train is aimed at reducing diesel use, fuel costs and emissions.

Union Home Minister Amit Shah and Gujarat Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel flag off India's first dual-fuel LNG train and powerful WAG-12 electric locomotive using up to 40% LNG in the Driving Power Car (DPC) at Sabarmati Railway Station, in Ahmedabad on September 27, 2026.

India’s first LNG-Diesel DEMU train launched: After launching the country’ first hydrogen train on July 17, 2026, Indian Railways has now introduced another alternative-fuel train based on Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG). The LNG-powered train was launched from Sabarmati in Gujarat on September 27.The new train uses a LNG-diesel dual-fuel system, allowing its engine to run on both LNG and diesel. The move is aimed at reducing diesel consumption, fuel costs and emissions while encouraging the use of alternative fuels in railway operations.

The new LNG train follows the hydrogen train as another alternative-fuel railway project. However, there is an important difference. The LNG train is not a completely LNG-only train. It uses a dual-fuel system, meaning the same engine can operate using both LNG and diesel.

The national transporter has converted two 1,400 HP Driving Power Cars (DPCs) at the Sabarmati Integrated Coaching Depot for the project. The system can use LNG to replace around 40 per cent of diesel consumption.
