Mumbai-Ahmedabad Bullet Train Project Update: 456 Km Piers Done, Track Laying & Sabarmati Bridge Ready

Get the latest Mumbai-Ahmedabad Bullet Train project updates. Pier work hits 456 km out of 465 km elevated route, 371 km viaduct built, 98 km track laid, and Sabarmati Bridge completed.

➤ Quick Project Highlights:

Total Corridor: 508 km (Connecting Mumbai and Ahmedabad/Sabarmati)

▪ Pier Construction: 456 km finished (out of 465 km elevated route)

▪ Viaduct Completed: 371 km

▪ Track Linking: 98 km laid with Japanese J-Slab track system

▪ OHE Electrification: 9,300+ masts installed (out of 22,000 total)

▪ Noise Barriers: 301 km installed

▪ Bridges Built: 18 river bridges and 16 steel truss bridges finished

▪ Mountain Tunnels: 4 tunnels excavated in Maharashtra (5 km NATM tunneling done)

▶ Pier Work: Only 9 Km Left to Complete:

Mainstream reports often focus only on the total 508 km length. But here is the real breakdown:

▪ Out of the 508 km corridor, only 465 km is elevated on viaducts.

▪ The remaining portion consists of the 21 km undersea and underground tunnel, mountain tunnels, and ground-level sections.

▪ 456 km of pier work is already complete.

▪ That leaves just 9 km of piers to finish. Once that is done, 100% of the elevated pillar work will be complete.

▶ Viaduct and Track Laying in Full Swing:

Civil structures are quickly turning into active rail infrastructure:

▪ 371 km of viaduct is fully cast and launched across Gujarat and Maharashtra.

▪ 98 km of track linking is completed using advanced Japanese Shinkansen J-Slab track slab technology.

▪ 301 km of noise barriers are now installed along the viaduct to cut aerodynamic sound when trains run at 320 km/h.

▶ Powering the Corridor: 9,300+ OHE Masts Up:

Electrification work has taken center stage across 206 km of the alignment:

▪ The corridor requires a total of approximately 22,000 Overhead Equipment (OHE) masts.

▪ Over 9,300 masts are already standing.

▪ This marks a swift transition from civil construction to electrical and traction systems.

➤ Two Massive Engineering Feats

1. Sabarmati River Bridge (Completed)

▪ Spans 480 meters in length and stands 36 meters tall (equivalent to a 12-storey building).

▪ Located just 1 km from Sabarmati station and 4 km from Ahmedabad station.

▪ It crosses right beside the existing Western Railway main line without disrupting running trains.

2. Vadodara Portal Beams (All 14 Installed)

▪ Engineered directly above the busy Delhi–Mumbai Rajdhani main line in Vadodara.

▪ All 14 special steel-and-concrete portal beams have been installed safely without blocking train schedules.

➤ River Bridges, Steel Bridges, and Mountain Tunnels

River Crossings: 18 major river bridges are finished, including crossings over the Sabarmati, Par, Purna, Mindhola, and Ambika rivers.

Steel Bridges: 16 out of 28 heavy steel truss bridges are installed, including the recently launched 100-meter span over National Highway 3 in Bhiwandi.

Maharashtra Tunnels: Excavation of 4 mountain tunnels is complete out 7. Achieving over 5 km of tunneling via the New Austrian Tunnelling Method (NATM).16 km Tunnelling under construction using two massive tunnel boring machines from Ghansoli to BKC.

★ When Will India’s First Bullet Train Run?

December 2026: Civil construction on the Vapi–Surat section is targeted for completion, clearing the way for integrated trial runs.

2027: The Surat–Bilimora stretch is scheduled to open as India's first operational bullet train section.

Full Corridor: Designed for speeds up to 320 km/h, cutting the travel time between Mumbai and Ahmedabad to around 2 hours and 7 minutes completion target Dec 2029.
