Wabtec Bags ₹839 Crore ($94M) Vande Bharat Sleeper Deal: Critical Tech & Redesigns Explained
Wabtec has won a ₹839 crore ($94M) order from Indian Railways to locally manufacture high-speed brakes, automatic doors, and gangways for 50 Vande Bharat Sleeper trains.
Wabtec Corporation (NYSE: WAB) has secured a landmark US$94 million (839 crore) contract from Indian Railways to supply mission-critical onboard systems for India’s high-speed Vande Bharat Sleeper train program. Awarded via the Integral Coach Factory (ICF), Chennai, the deal covers 50 trainsets consisting of 24 coaches each (1,200 cars total), scheduled for delivery over the next two financial years through March 2029.
WWhat Wabtec is Building: 3 Critical Transit Systems
Microprocessor-Controlled Electro-Pneumatic Braking Systems: High-energy disc brakes, brake calipers, and wheel slide protection (WSP) units tailored for 160–200 km/h speeds, delivering jerk-free deceleration without locking wheels.
Automatic Flush Plug Doors: High-speed aerodynamic sliding doors compliant with EN 14752 safety norms and ICF Specification 306, featuring anti-pinch sensors and hermetic acoustic seals to keep out high-speed noise and retain climate control.
Sealed Articulated Gangways: Fully enclosed, fire-retardant (EN 45545 HL3) inter-coach vestibules that give overnight passengers quiet, safe, and weatherproof movement across 24 continuous coaches.
Why the Sleeper Variant Required a Complete Re-Engineering
Unlike daytime chair-car rakes, configuring an overnight high-speed sleeper required bespoke mechanical and electrical adaptation. According to Ajay Mani, Managing Director of Wabtec Transit India:
Underframe Water Reservoir Redesign: Long-distance sleeper runs require substantially larger potable water and bio-retention tanks under the car body. All pneumatic pipe routings, manifold valve blocks, and brake mountings had to be relocated to accommodate the enlarged tanks.
Tare Weight and Braking Recalibration: Multi-tier sleeper berths and heavier auxiliary equipment shift the vehicle’s center of gravity and loaded tare weight, requiring re-tuned braking effort algorithms to maintain passenger comfort while sleeping.
35-Year Life-Cycle Maintenance: Aligned with Indian Railways' long-term reliability contracts, the systems integrate Wabtec ForgeWorks AI condition monitoring, stretching regular overhaul cycles from 6 years to 8–9 years.
Local Manufacturing and ₹5,000 Crore Ambition
Hosur Campus (Tamil Nadu): Operational since 1980, Wabtec’s LEED Gold-certified Hosur facility serves as the primary integration and assembly plant for plug doors, gangways, and brake electronics.
Rohtak Facility (Haryana): Built with an $18 million investment, the Rohtak manufacturing campus manufactures axle-mounted brake discs, distributor valves, and friction materials.
Revenue Targets: As reported by The Hindu and Business Standard, Wabtec India’s transit revenue generated ~₹3,000 crore in 2025, projects ~₹3,200 crore in 2026, and targets ₹5,000 crore (~$600M) by 2029–30 under its "India for India" and "India for the World" export model.
